The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has praised the landmark agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia to resolve their ongoing dispute, expressing optimism that this development will enhance communication, dialogue, and stability in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia and Ethiopia reached an understanding to address tensions stemming from Ethiopia’s plans to develop a port in Somaliland, a breakaway region.

The contentious project had involved regional powers and posed risks to stability in the area. The agreement, achieved after talks mediated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday, aims to establish commercial arrangements ensuring Ethiopia’s “reliable, secure, and sustainable access to and from the sea.”

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) commended Türkiye’s role and Erdoğan’s efforts in facilitating the agreement. The Ministry highlighted that this resolution, achieved through direct dialogue, marks a critical step toward fostering regional development, peace, and cooperation.

The UAE emphasized the potential benefits of this agreement for both nations, noting that it serves their mutual interests while advancing prosperity and growth. The statement also reaffirmed the UAE’s strong and close ties with both Somalia and Ethiopia, reiterating its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.

Underscoring its dedication to peaceful conflict resolution, the UAE expressed hope that the agreement will contribute to broader efforts toward regional and global harmony.
