Ghana’s Interior Ministry has announced the temporary closure of all land borders as part of efforts to safeguard the integrity of the elections taking place in the country on Saturday.

The measure, effective immediately, will remain in place until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8.

In a statement issued by Interior Minister Henry Quartey, the Ministry urged citizens and travelers to comply with the directive and cooperate with state security agencies tasked with its enforcement.

This decision reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment during the electoral process. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain law and order as Ghanaians prepare to cast their votes.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) also emphasized that no military personnel will be stationed at polling stations, aiming to foster a transparent and conflict-free voting environment.

Twelve candidates are vying to succeed him, but the race is seen as mainly between Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, chosen successor of Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Opinion polls have tipped Mahama, who served as president from 2012 to 2016, for a potential comeback.

Polling stations open at 0700 GMT and close at 1700 GMT.
