The European Union voiced deep concern on Monday over escalating violence in Syria, urging immediate de-escalation and prioritization of civilian safety.

In a statement, the EU condemned Russian airstrikes on densely populated areas, describing them as breaches of international humanitarian norms.

“The European Union is monitoring closely the latest developments in Syria. We urge all sides to de-escalate and to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as unhindered humanitarian access in line with international humanitarian law,” the statement read.

The renewed violence raises the call for the urgent need for a political resolution to the ongoing conflict. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to diplomatic efforts guided by UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which proposes a Syrian-led peace process as the path to stability.

The crisis intensified on November 27, with clashes erupting between Assad regime forces and anti-regime armed groups in the western countryside of Aleppo province.

Within days, the armed groups advanced rapidly, capturing key areas, including Khan Shaykhun district, by November 30. This marked their consolidation of control over the entire Idlib region.
