The Arab League has emphasized the importance of tolerance as a cornerstone for peace and sustainable development, urging societies to respect human rights and promote equality.

This call comes from Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the Arab League, in a statement marking the International Day for Tolerance on November 16.

Ambassador Abu Ghazaleh noted that this year’s observance takes place amid escalating global tensions, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the conflict in Lebanon, the refugee crisis in Europe, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. These events, she said, underscore the need for tolerance and dialogue to address extremism and conflict.

Highlighting the Arab Strategy for the Alliance of Civilizations, she outlined its mission to bridge divides and promote cultural understanding through various programs. Abu Ghazaleh stressed the importance of embedding tolerance in Arab societies by fostering cooperation between governments, civil society, and educational institutions.

The Ambassador also urged governments to implement policies that prohibit discrimination and violence while promoting equality through campaigns and discussions on pressing issues like racism.

Established by the United Nations, the International Day for Tolerance highlights the role of tolerance in building inclusive, peaceful, and just societies.
