Palestinian women in Israeli prison face inhumane conditions, strip off hijab, protective wears
Palestinian women detained in Israel’s Damon Prison face inhumane conditions, which have significantly deteriorated since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, reports the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs.
The commission gathered testimonies from 94 women currently held at the prison, revealing alarming abuse.
Recently, the prison’s new director has implemented harsh measures, citing “revenge” for the October 7 attacks.
These measures include confiscating religious clothing and headscarves, replacing them with grey tracksuits. Prison guards conduct arbitrary early-morning searches, subjecting women to strip searches and seizing their belongings.
As winter approaches, prisoners face further hardships. They are denied warmer clothing and must share limited blankets and hygiene products. New prisoners often necessitate cutting towels in half, exacerbating the shortage.
Additionally, women are forced to share shoes when accessing the yard, clinic, or lawyer meetings, as Israeli guards have confiscated their footwear as a punitive measure.
The conditions constitute a clear violation of human rights and dignity. The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs urges attention to the plight of Palestinian women in Damon Prison, highlighting the need for immediate action to address their basic needs and protect them from further abuse.
