Just in: Biden condemns antisemitic attacks on Israeli fans in Amsterdam, calls for accountability
U.S. President Joe Biden condemned recent antisemitic attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam, describing the incidents as “despicable” and reminiscent of historic persecution against Jewish communities.
In a Facebook post, Biden stated, “The antisemitic attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam are despicable and echo dark moments in history when Jews were persecuted.”
Biden confirmed that U.S. officials have been in contact with both Israeli and Dutch authorities, expressing gratitude for the Dutch government’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. He emphasized the importance of holding the perpetrators accountable, reinforcing the U.S. stance on supporting its allies in combating antisemitism globally.
The statement follows reports of violence and clashes involving Israeli supporters of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football team, who were in Amsterdam for a Europa League match against Ajax.
Media sources described altercations between Maccabi fans and pro-Palestinian demonstrators, along with confrontations involving police. Video footage shared online showed instances of Israeli fans tearing down Palestinian flags in the city, further fueling tensions.
The Dutch police reported the arrest of around 20 individuals on charges related to public disorder and the illegal use of fireworks during gatherings in central Amsterdam.
Biden’s post concluded with a call to action, stating, “We must relentlessly fight antisemitism, wherever it emerges,” underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing hate and discrimination worldwide.
