Hamas commends Spain for denying docking permission to ships transporting weapons to Israel
Hamas has praised Spain’s decision to deny docking permission to two cargo vessels allegedly transporting weapons to Israel.
In a statement, Hamas said the action aligns with Spain’s “honourable position” against “the Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip,” and aims to stop supplying arms to further Israel’s “genocide against the Palestinian people.”
The group also called on the United Nations to adopt a resolution that would make it illegal to export arms to Israel and to push Israel to cease its military actions in Gaza.
Reports say the ships had departed from New York and requested docking permission at Spain’s Algeciras port. However, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed, “the vessels will not stop in Spain,” without providing additional details on the decision.
Spain has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza. In a symbolic move in May, Spain formally recognized the state of Palestine, joining Norway and Ireland in the new stance.
The denial of docking access to suspected arms transporters aligns with Spain’s recent condemnations of Israel’s actions in Gaza, marking another step in the nation’s opposition to the conflict.
