An Iranian revolutionary court has handed down death sentences to four people accused of spying for Israel.

The semi-official Fars news agency reported the verdict on Wednesday.

Three of the defendants allegedly aided Israel‘s Mossad in transporting equipment used in the 2020 assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

Fakhrizadeh was considered a key figure in Iran‘s nuclear program by Western intelligence services. However, the Islamic Republic denies pursuing nuclear weapons.

Details surrounding Fakhrizadeh’s killing emerged in 2021, with reports suggesting Mossad agents smuggled a one-ton gun into Iran. Israel has consistently declined to comment on the matter.

In response to the sentencing, an Israeli government spokesman reiterated their stance on not commenting on such issues, leaving the circumstances surrounding the verdict unclear.
