United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised concerns over the escalating violence in North Gaza, stating that he is “shocked by harrowing levels of death, injury and destruction” in the region.

The violent situation hit the peak again as Israeli forces conducted attacks aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping, leaving Palestinian civilians trapped and vulnerable.

Israeli forces have bombed six buildings in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, killing at least 45 people, as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) calls on the United States to stop the “systematic extermination of an entire population” in the besieged territory.

In a statement, Guterres’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric emphasized that “the plight of Palestinian civilians trapped in North Gaza is unbearable”, highlighting the desperate need for humanitarian aid and protection.

The secretary-general painted a grim picture of the reality on the ground, where “civilians are trapped under rubble, the sick and wounded going without life-saving healthcare, and families lacking food and shelter.”

The devastating scenario underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid.

Guterres has repeatedly condemned the use of violence, stressing that “nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians.”

In a recent address to the Security Council, Guterres appealed for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, emphasizing that “even war has rules.”

He urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians from harm.

The situation in Gaza has taken a staggering toll, with nearly 43,000 Palestinians killed and more than 100, 000 others injured.

Guterres’s plea for peace and dignity echoes the sentiments of many world leaders, who are calling for a negotiated two-state solution to bring an end to the suffering and bloodshed
