The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has released a disturbing report revealing that nearly half of Muslims living in EU member states experience discrimination and hate speech in their daily lives.

The study, “Being Muslim in Europe: Experiences of Muslims,” surveyed 9,600 Muslims across 13 EU countries.

Conducted between September 2021 and October 2022, the study found a significant increase in racism and discrimination against Muslims between 2016 and 2022.

The proportion of Muslims reporting experiences of racism in Europe rose from 39% before 2016 to 47% between 2016 and October 2022.

Austria, Germany, and Finland top the list of countries where Muslims experience the most discrimination, with 71%, 68%, and 63% respectively. In contrast, Sweden, Spain, and Italy reported the lowest levels of complaints, at 22%, 30%, and 34%.

The report highlights the challenges faced by Muslims in various aspects of life, including employment, education, housing, and business. More than half of Muslims born in Europe reported experiencing discrimination based on race during job searches.

Muslim women wearing religious symbols, such as headscarves, face greater discrimination, particularly in employment.

FRA Director Sirpa Rautio described the findings as “alarming,” stating, “We are witnessing a worrying surge in racism and discrimination against Muslims in Europe… Instead of sowing division, we need to ensure everyone feels safe, included, and respected.”

The report emphasizes the need for urgent action to address anti-Muslim sentiment and promote inclusivity across the EU.
