Turkey pursues BRICS membership, deepening ties with emerging powers
Turkey is making a bold move by pursuing membership in the BRICS group, a coalition of emerging market nations that includes top nations in the world.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s determination to join BRICS is driven by his desire to expand Turkey’s global influence and strengthen ties beyond its traditional Western allies.
The move is significant, as Turkey would be the first NATO member to join the alliance, which positions itself as a counterweight to Western powers.

“We are determined to further our dialogue with the BRICS family, with whom we have developed close relations based on mutual respect and win-win,” Erdogan told delegates at the BRICS forum in the Russian city of Kazan.
BRICS, he stressed, made a “unique contribution.. to the construction of a more just world” through “the development of global trade, economic growth and sustainable development goals.”
Erdogan’s comments at the BRICS forum in Kazan, Russia, highlighted the mutual respect and win-win relationships Turkey has developed with BRICS nations.
He emphasized that the current global mechanisms established after World War II are no longer effective, and BRICS has made a unique contribution to creating a more just world through global trade, economic growth, and sustainable development.
Turkey’s membership would not only diversify its economic partnerships but also give it a seat at the table in shaping global governance. The BRICS alliance has expanded this year, adding four new members, including Iran, and Turkey’s inclusion would further bolster its influence.
