The FBI has launched an investigation into the public disclosure of highly classified intelligence documents detailing Israel’s plans for a retaliatory strike on Iran.

The documents, prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, outline US interpretations of Israeli Air Force and Navy planning based on satellite imagery from October 15-16.

The documents somehow made their way onto the Telegram messaging app last week, sparking concern over the leak’s origin, with officials still unsure whether it was a hack or an inside job.

White House spokesman John Kirby stated that it has not been determined whether the disclosure was a hack or a leak.

President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation, expressing deep concern over the unauthorized disclosure of classified information. “The president remains deeply concerned about any leakage of classified information into the public domain. That is not supposed to happen, and it’s unacceptable when it does,” Kirby said.

The leaked documents come amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. On October 1, Iran launched a ballistic-missile barrage against Israel, its second direct attack in six months.

In response, Israel has intensified its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, particularly after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed on Sunday that an investigation was underway.

The situation remains volatile, with global leaders calling for restraint and diplomacy to prevent further escalation. The FBI stressed that it is working closely with the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community to investigate the leak.
