Exclusive: Former US gang member exposes Muslims’ unlikely power in prison (Video)
Terrance “Gangsta” Williams, who spent over 27 years in prison, has shared a fascinating insight into the dynamics of power among religious groups behind bars.
Although Christians are the majority in most prison compounds, Muslims wield significant influence, he said in a revealing video by MuslimConvertStories.
Williams detailed how the unity and brotherhood in Islam create a strong sense of protection and loyalty among Muslim inmates. “In our deen, when you take shahadah, they tell you your blood is sacred, your brother’s property is sacred, you know, protect your brother’s honor,” he said, describing the strong bonds that form within the Muslim community.

This sense of unity leads to a tightly knit group that is often mistaken for a gang by outsiders. “So people be like, oh, they’re a gang,” he added, referring to how closely Muslim brothers stick together in prison.
The consequences of crossing a Muslim inmate are severe, according to Williams. “If you put your hand on a Muslim, you’re gonna have maybe 30, 40, 50 people in your dorm trying to find out what’s going on,” he stated.
This collective response to any threat against a fellow Muslim reinforces their position of power and demonstrates the strength of their community. For Williams, this unity and the willingness to protect one another are the reasons why Muslims hold such influence, despite being outnumbered.
Terrance “Gangsta” Williams is not just any inmate; he is a former New Orleans street criminal who was once a member of the infamous Hot Boys gang in the 1990s.
After dealing with illegal substances and becoming involved in violent plots, he was eventually caught by the FBI through wiretaps. His plan to attack drug dealers from New York landed him in prison, where he would spend nearly three decades behind bars. Through his time in prison, Williams gained firsthand experience of the dynamics between religious groups, offering a unique perspective on life behind the walls.
