A suspected tornado tore through a retirement community in Fort Pierce, Florida, leaving multiple fatalities in its wake.

According to St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson, the community was severely impacted, although the sheriff’s department hasn’t released further details yet.

The devastating tornadoes didn’t stop there, causing widespread destruction across multiple counties and demolishing around 125 homes, mostly mobile homes, as confirmed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The aftermath is dire, with over 1.3 million homes and businesses in Florida currently without power.

“At this point, it’s too dangerous to evacuate safely, so you have to shelter in place and just hunker down,” DeSantis said upon announcing the landfall.

This disaster comes on the heels of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, claiming at least 22 lives in the state and leaving millions without power. The storm’s impact was felt far and wide, with North Carolina bearing the brunt of the devastation, reporting over 110 deaths.

As the people of Florida struggle to come to terms with the latest disaster, concerns about the state’s ability to cope with natural disasters are growing. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but one thing is clear: the road to recovery will be long and challenging.
