China’s Ministry of Commerce has called on the European Commission to take concrete actions to “implement its political will and get back to the right track of resolving trade frictions through consultations.”

This plea comes after the EU’s proposal to impose definitive countervailing duties on Chinese battery electric vehicles gained support from EU Member States, paving the way for tariffs.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce emphasized, “China firmly opposes the draft final ruling of the EU side, but has also noted its political will to continue to resolve the issue through negotiations.” Technical teams from both sides are scheduled to resume negotiations on October 7.

The Ministry cautioned the EU about the detrimental effects of additional tariffs, warning that it would not only fail to address existing problems but also undermine Chinese enterprises’ confidence and willingness to invest in Europe.

“China’s position is consistent and clear,” the spokesperson reiterated. “China firmly opposes the unfair, illegal, and unreasonable protectionist practices of the EU in this case, and resolutely opposes the EU additional countervailing duty on Chinese electric vehicles.”

This development highlights the ongoing tensions between China and the EU over trade policies. As the two sides navigate these complexities, the outcome of their negotiations will have significant implications for the global economy.
