Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday, retaliating against Israel’s campaign targeting Tehran’s Hezbollah allies in Lebanon.

The attack prompted widespread alarms across Israel, with explosions heard in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley, forcing Israelis to seek shelter. Reporters on state television took cover, lying flat on the ground during live broadcasts.

Israeli army radio reported that nearly 200 missiles were launched from Iran, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for launching tens of missiles, warning of a “more crushing and ruinous” response if Israel retaliated.

Israel’s military later gave the all-clear, allowing citizens to exit shelters. Military spokesman Daniel Hagari confirmed no injuries resulted from the attack but described it as serious, with consequences to follow.

A senior Iranian official revealed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered the missile launch, and Khamenei is currently in a secure location. This move follows Israel’s strikes against Hezbollah’s top leadership in Lebanon, including Hassan Nasrallah, a key figure in Iran’s regional network.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has pledged U.S. assistance to Israel in defending against Iranian missile attacks, emphasizing protection for American personnel in the region.

While commenting on the escalation, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the counterattacks, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and a ceasefire.

The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, with concerns about potential regional escalation. The international community worries about the growing tensions, with many leaders calling for restraint and a peaceful resolution.
