Greece calls for ‘effective pressure’ on Israel as rampaging attacks on Gaza, Lebanon spread
Greece’s foreign minister, George Gerapetritis, has expressed concern that Israel isn’t facing enough pressure to end the war in Gaza, and the escalating situation in Lebanon is becoming increasingly difficult for the international community to manage.
“It seems that there is no effective pressure upon Israel,” Gerapetritis noted in a Reuters interview at the United Nations General Assembly.
As a strategic partner and friend of Israel, Greece is urging a halt to Israel’s ground and air assault on Gaza, which has resulted in over 41,000 Palestinian casualties and widespread destruction.

Gerapetritis highlighted the need for joint initiatives from Arabs and Europeans to address the issue, rather than separate efforts that might put undue pressure on Israel.
The situation in Lebanon is particularly alarming, with Gerapetritis warning that it could become a “zone of tremendous hostility” and a “clear minefield.” Greece has been working to prevent the spillover of the conflict, but so far, international efforts have been unsuccessful.
In a positive development, Greece has been pushing for a project to bring injured and traumatized children from Gaza to the European Union.
Gerapetritis hopes that ongoing talks with European member states, Palestinians, and Israelis will soon yield results, with Greece prepared to take in around 500 children.
