Iran insists on right to retaliate after envoy attack in Lebanon

The Iranian government has vowed to respond to the attack on its Lebanese ambassador, Mojtaba Amani, in accordance with international law.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Tehran’s UN representative, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the “sabotage and terrorism” by the “rogue Israeli regime” and stressed that Western countries, especially the US, bear responsibility for supporting Israel.

The letter urged the UN to condemn Israel’s actions and take necessary steps against the “terrorist regime.”

A wave of explosions targeting two-way radios in Lebanon yesterday left 14 people dead and 450 injured, according to the Ministry of Health.

This incident follows another explosion the previous day that killed 12 people and injured 2,800, with 300 in critical condition. The Lebanese government and Hezbollah point to Israel as the perpetrator and vow severe retaliation.

The recent events are the latest in the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. Just last month, Hezbollah launched over 320 rockets at Israel, targeting military positions, while Israel carried out preemptive strikes against the group.

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General António Guterres has warned of the “serious risk of a dramatic escalation” and called on all parties to “exercise maximum restraint”.

“Obviously the logic of making all these devices explode is to do it as a pre-emptive strike before a major military operation,” he told reporters.
