Exclusive: YouTube shuts down channel using Qur’an verses as songs after Muslim backlash
YouTube has closed a controversial channel titled “Quranic Songs” following widespread outrage from Muslims. The page, which had amassed 42,000 followers, faced intense criticism for using verses from the Qur’an in various musical genres, prompting calls for its removal.
The channel’s description promoted a fusion of sacred Qur’anic verses with modern musical styles, including rock, pop, funk, techno, and blues.
It invited followers to experience what it described as “a harmonious blend of faith and melody” through this unique approach to expressing spirituality.
However, this creative interpretation sparked significant backlash, with many in the Muslim community condemning the use of Qur’anic verses in a musical context as disrespectful and inappropriate.
Critics argued that the channel’s content violated the sanctity of the holy text, which is traditionally recited with deep reverence and without musical accompaniment.
In response to the widespread disapproval, YouTube took action and closed the page. The platform’s decision highlights the sensitivities around religious content and the responsibility of creators to respect cultural and spiritual norms.
While reacting to the ban, the page owner wrote: “I want to take a moment to personally thank each and every one of you for your unwavering support and patience during this challenging time. It has come to my attention that my channel is currently facing a coordinated mass reporting campaign which has unfortunately affected the availability of some content. Those malicious parties are trying to extinguish Allah’s light with their reports, but Allah will certainly perfect His light, even to their dismay.”
“I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and want to assure you that | am doing everything in my power to resolve these technical issues. Your encouragement and love for the channel fuel my determination to keep creating and sharing content that brings a fresh and meaningful connection to the Quran through music.”
