UN General Assembly demands end to Israel’s “unlawful” occupation within 12 months
The UN General Assembly made a landmark decision on Wednesday passing a resolution that calls for an end to Israel’s “unlawful” occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months.
The resolution, spearheaded by Palestine and co-sponsored by Türkiye and over 50 other nations, garnered overwhelming support with 124 member states voting in favour, 14 opposing, and 43 abstentions.
At its core, the resolution demands that Israel’s occupation be deemed illegal under international law, referencing rulings from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the UN Security Council (UNSC).
It also highlights that Israeli settlements are in violation of international law and asserts the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination as outlined in the UN Charter.
The resolution reaffirms that the Palestinian issue remains “the permanent responsibility of the United Nations” until a resolution is achieved in line with international law.
It underscores the urgent need for Israel to end its occupation, which began in 1967, and requests UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to provide a report on its implementation within three months of its adoption.
