Arab League chief denounces Israel over violent pager blasts

Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit has denounced the violent Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which resulted in multiple casualties, including a child, and left thousands injured.

The Muslim Parrot reported that paging devices linked to Hezbollah members in Lebanon and Syria exploded on Tuesday, causing the deaths of 12 people and injuring up to 2,800 others.

Gamal Roshdy, Aboul Gheit’s spokesman, conveyed the League chief’s warning about the repercussions of this “dangerous escalation against Lebanon and its people.”

He also criticised Israeli leaders for making irresponsible statements that seemed aimed at expanding the conflict on the southern Lebanon front, which could destabilize the entire region.

Aboul Gheit reaffirmed his “unwavering solidarity with Lebanon, its people, and its government in the face of this blatant assault on the country’s sovereignty and security.”

He called on the UN Security Council to urgently address and counter Israel’s “continued and reckless” threats to regional security and peace.

In another development, Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, reached out to Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati and his Lebanese counterpart, Abdallah Bou Habib, following the pager blasts.

Abdelatty conveyed President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives affirming Egypt’s support for Lebanon’s security and stability and its sovereignty from external threats.

El-Sisi also offered to provide any necessary assistance to “our brothers in Lebanon during these critical circumstances.”

Abdelatty further warned against escalation, pointing out the danger of a full-scale regional war, stating that the situation in southern Lebanon indicated the region was at a “dangerous juncture due to irresponsible and ill-considered unilateral actions.”
