The United States has accused Iran-aligned militias of launching an attack on a US diplomatic facility near Baghdad International Airport last week, heightening tensions in the region.
The US Embassy in Iraq issued a stark warning on Friday, attributing the assault to groups with ties to Iran, although no injuries were reported in the incident.
“Iran-aligned groups in Iraq launched an attack targeting a diplomatic facility in Baghdad last Tuesday,” the US Embassy stated, underscoring the continued threats faced by American personnel in the country. The embassy emphasized Iraq’s commitment to protecting foreign missions, with a specific call to safeguard US diplomatic and military presence.
Tahseen Al-Khafaji, head of the Iraqi security media cell (ISMC), confirmed the attack, noting that an explosion occurred late Tuesday near Baghdad International Airport, where international coalition advisors, including US forces, were stationed. Although no party has claimed responsibility, security services are investigating the attack, which resulted in material damage but did not disrupt airport operations.
The attack comes amid ongoing discussions between Baghdad and Washington on the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from Iraq. Despite the agreement, the United States warned it “reserves the right to self-defense and to protect US personnel anywhere in the world,” signaling a strong stance in response to these escalating threats.
