Iraq calls for urgent truce in Gaza at UN Security Council meeting
Iraq’s Charge d’Affaires to the United Nations in New York, Abbas Kadhim Obaid, called for an urgent and permanent ceasefire and a more effective reaction to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.
Obaid’s remarks took place during a meeting held by the UN Security Council on July 26 to review the humanitarian situation in Gaza as following the continuous Israeli assault, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
Members of the UN Security Council emphasized the dire humanitarian situation of the Palestinian people and the urgent need to achieve a ceasefire in order to save lives and provide humanitarian aid.
Obeid said that the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza caused an unparalleled humanitarian catastrophe. He added that the situation has gotten worse despite several appeals from UN agencies and international organizations.
The Iraqi diplomat stressed that because of the continuous military assaults by Israeli troops, Gaza has become a destructed area where circumstances are getting worse, particularly for children.
Obaid urged the UN Security Council to act decisively to alleviate Gaza’s suffering and to secure an immediate ceasefire, highlighting that the ongoing siege laid by the Israeli forces cannot be accepted.
