Malaysian company signs $315.9 million contract for Baghdad Metro
The Mayoralty of Baghdad signed a $315.9 million contract with Malaysia’s HSS Engineering Berhad (HEB) to provide consultancy services for Baghdad Metro.
Under this contract, the Malaysian firm will be responsible for project management, consultancy, and supervision services.
Baghdad Metro is a significant project intended to relieve traffic congestion and provide a contemporary and effective means of transportation in the Iraqi capital, where the population is around eight million.
With 64 stations spread across 148 kilometers, the Baghdad Metro project will cover 85 percent of the capital city, including all holy sites, hospitals, colleges, and tourism districts.
The project will contain seven lines, with subterranean, surface, and elevated parts, and is expected to be completed after five years.
More than 26 multinational corporations from China, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Qatar have shown their interest in participating in the metro project’s execution.
The construction of Baghdad Metro is expected to start in July 2024 and be finished in May 2029.
HEB has carried out similar major projects in Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Cambodia.
