BP Gibson inaugurates Muslim Leadership Roundtable in Bronx

The Bronx Borough President, Vanessa L. Gibson, has inaugurated the Muslim Leadership Roundtable in Bronx.

The inaugural event took place on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 11am to 1pm at 851 Grand Concourse, 2nd floor conference room.

This momentous event brought together a diverse group of influential Muslim leaders and community members from various organizations across the Bronx.

Attendees included prominent figures such as Captain Muhammad J. Ashraf, Commanding Officer of the 41st Precinct; Ammar Abdul Rahman from Bronx Masjid Al Haram USA Inc, Marwa Janini from the Arab American Association of NY, and Kujegi Camara from the Smiling Coast Women Empowerment Network.

The event commenced with a reading from the Qur’an by Imam Cheick Imam NDAO, followed by introductions from the attendees.

The roundtable discussion was chaired by Mohammed Mujumder, who emphasized the importance of Muslim representation. He was also the keynote speaker as the first Muslim chairperson of community board 9.

Remarks were delivered by Captain Ashraf, Fidel Malena (Bronx Regional Representative), and Mamadou Siré Bah (Director of Muslim American Affairs).

David Ahmed Coulibaly, Director of Community Affairs and Special Adviser to the Bronx Borough President, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The establishment of the Bronx Muslim Leadership Roundtable marks a significant milestone in our journey towards fostering a stronger and more inclusive Bronx community. By uniting Muslim leaders and community members, this initiative aims to empower and advocate for the diverse needs of our vibrant Muslim population.”

Coulibaly further emphasized the importance of collective leadership, “Through meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and representation, the roundtable will serve as a platform to address important issues, uplift voices, and promote understanding. We believe that by harnessing the power of collective leadership, we can create positive change and ensure a brighter future for all.”

The Bronx Muslim Leadership Roundtable is poised to become a beacon of unity and advocacy, reflecting the Borough President’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The community eagerly anticipates the positive impact this initiative will have on the social fabric of the Bronx.

The Bronx Borough President Muslim Leadership Roundtable aims to create a collaborative platform where Muslim leaders can engage in open dialogue, network, and develop strategic plans to address the specific needs and concerns of the Muslim community in the Bronx.

By fostering empowerment, engagement, and representation, the roundtable seeks to build a stronger, more inclusive Bronx. Key objectives include:

Collaboration: Promoting coordinated efforts among Muslim leaders to tackle common challenges.

Empowerment and Engagement: Providing a forum for Muslim leaders to share their perspectives and participate in decision-making processes.

Representation: Enhancing the visibility and influence of the Muslim community in local government and community initiatives.

Addressing Community Needs: Identifying and addressing issues related to education, public safety, employment, healthcare, social services, and cultural preservation.
