Iraq allocates $25m to support UNRWA
Iraq has pledged $25 million in support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), following the cessation of funding from several Western nations.
The announcement was made by Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, during the sidelines of the 161st session of the Arab League Council held in Cairo, Egypt.
During a press statement, Minister Hussein reiterated Iraq’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing the critical role of UNRWA in providing essential aid and services to Palestinian refugees. He lamented the withdrawal of support by Western countries, characterizing it as a significant setback for the organization.
Minister Hussein urged both Arab and non-Arab nations to continue their backing of UNRWA, underscoring the detrimental impact of withholding support on the Palestinian refugee population. He called upon other countries to follow Iraq’s lead in providing financial assistance to the agency, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Highlighting Iraq’s proactive stance on the matter, Minister Hussein disclosed that the decision to allocate $25 million to UNRWA was endorsed by the Iraqi cabinet two weeks prior. He stressed the importance of solidarity among nations in addressing the needs of Palestinian refugees and preserving their rights.
Moreover, Minister Hussein condemned the recent hostilities in Gaza as violations of international law, particularly international humanitarian law. He expressed concern over the policies of certain Western nations towards the Palestinian cause, characterizing them as perplexing and detrimental.
Iraq’s contribution to UNRWA reaffirms its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly Palestinian refugees. Minister Hussein’s call for global solidarity underscores the importance of collective action in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by the Palestinian people.
