Iraq’s Minister of Trade, Atheer Al-Ghurairi, has announced that Iraq has fulfilled the necessary conditions to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) after undertaking significant economic reforms and improving the investment climate within the country.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al-Ghurairi confirmed that Baghdad has successfully resolved issues concerning goods and services within the specified deadlines, aligning Iraq with the requirements for integration into the global trade framework.

Al-Ghurairi made these statements during his participation in the 13th Ministerial Conference of the WTO, held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Iraq’s interest in WTO membership dates back to 2004, reflecting its aspiration to regain prominence in the global economy.

Highlighting the significance of the moment, Al-Ghurairi emphasized that an Arab-level gathering would convene to share insights into the pre-membership phase and strategies to leverage the advantages offered by WTO membership.

Beyond the immediate focus on Iraq’s accession, discussions during the conference centered on the future trajectory of global trade amidst prevailing challenges. Al-Ghurairi underscored the message sent to nations worldwide regarding the inherent value of WTO membership.

Moreover, Al-Ghurairi stressed Iraq’s commitment to expanding its commercial and economic ties globally, aiming to foster new avenues for collaboration and economic growth. With the completion of necessary requirements, Iraq is poised to reassert its position as a significant participant in the international trade arena.
