Iraq has formally submitted a request to host the 2025 Arab League summit, aiming to convene the prestigious gathering in the capital city of Baghdad. The announcement was made by Basem Al-Awadi, the spokesperson for the Iraqi government, who emphasized the nation’s commitment to revitalizing its infrastructure to accommodate significant regional and international events.

Al-Awadi highlighted Iraq’s aspiration to reclaim a prominent role on the global stage, citing past periods of isolation under authoritarian rule and the challenges posed by terrorism. He underscored the necessity of refurbishing essential infrastructure, including presidential complexes and government hospitality facilities, which have deteriorated over time.

The urgency to enhance Iraq’s infrastructure stems from the country’s desire to leverage such events as platforms for diplomatic engagement and showcasing its potential for hosting major gatherings. The proposed rehabilitation efforts include measures to revitalize key venues crucial for hosting dignitaries and facilitating diplomatic discussions.

In a significant move, the Iraqi cabinet, on February 7, endorsed plans to revamp several presidential complexes identified by the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities, and Public Works. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the necessary facilities are up to standard ahead of the potential hosting of the 2025 Arab League summit.

If successful, hosting the summit would mark a milestone for Iraq’s diplomatic agenda, signaling its readiness to engage actively in regional affairs and foster dialogue among Arab League member states. Such initiatives align with broader efforts to position Iraq as a stabilizing force in the Middle East, promoting cooperation and constructive engagement among regional actors.

The proposal comes in the wake of the 32nd Arab League summit held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on May 19, 2023, and as Bahrain prepares to host the 33rd Arab League summit in 2024. Iraq’s bid to host the 2025 summit underscores its strategic intent to reestablish itself as a key player in regional diplomacy and contribute to shaping the future of the Arab world.
