Pakistan launched retaliatory missile strikes into Iran, claiming to target “terrorist hideouts” in the Sistan-Baluchestan province. The strikes, confirmed by Pakistan’s foreign ministry, resulted in the reported deaths of seven individuals, including three women and four children, according to Iranian state TV.

This exchange of air strikes unfolds amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, marked by multiple concurrent crises. Israel is engaged in conflicts with both Hamas in Gaza and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. Simultaneously, Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria are targeting US forces, while the US and UK have undertaken strikes against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. The longstanding accusations of harboring militant groups along their shared border have fueled hostilities between Pakistan and Iran.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry defended its actions, citing “credible intelligence of impending large-scale terrorist activities.” Despite asserting respect for Iran’s sovereignty, Pakistan emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting national security against all threats.

The origin of this retaliatory cycle traces back to Iran’s strikes on Tuesday, which targeted an area in Pakistan’s Balochistan province near the Iranian border. Iran maintained that the strikes were directed solely at Jaish al-Adl, an ethnic Baloch Sunni Muslim group responsible for attacks within Iran.

As tensions escalate, China, a staunch ally to both nations, has called for restraint to prevent further escalation. Analysts view Pakistan’s response as an attempt to restore deterrence, balancing the scales following Iran’s offensive actions throughout the region.

Reflecting on the broader context, experts suggest that Iran’s recent strikes, including those in Iraq and Syria, are driven by the volatile dynamics in the Middle East. Tehran, while expressing a desire to avoid wider conflict, faces internal and external pressures, prompting it to flex its military influence.

In a climate marked by border tensions and the most serious escalation in recent memory, international observers, including China, urge both Pakistan and Iran to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation in the region.
