South Korean conglomerate Hanwha has announced the resumption of construction on Iraq’s Bismayah New City project after a hiatus exceeding three years. The decision, effective February 2024, marks a pivotal moment in the ambitious housing development undertaken by Hanwha Engineering & Construction (Hanwha E&C).

The Bismayah New City project stands out as a remarkable endeavor, aiming to establish an entire city across 59 city blocks. This expansive urban landscape encompasses eight municipalities, community centers, and an impressive 834 residential buildings, collectively providing a staggering 100,080 housing units. Such magnitude is poised to address the housing needs of over 600,000 Iraqi residents, positioning the project as a pivotal solution to urban development challenges.

Distinguishing itself through innovative urban planning, the New Bismayah City features six-to-eight-lane surface highways and an extensive 20-kilometer perimeter. Notably, these infrastructural elements are complemented by an encircling underground tunnel, housing critical electrical and communication networks. This forward-thinking approach to urban connectivity and infrastructure underscores the commitment of Hanwha E&C to create a modern, sustainable living environment within the heart of Iraq.

Situated 10 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, the ongoing construction activities of the Bismayah New City project signify a collaborative effort between Hanwha and local stakeholders. The resumption of this transformative project not only revitalizes construction operations but also reinforces Hanwha’s dedication to contributing to Iraq’s urban development and housing needs.

As construction progresses in the strategic location southeast of the capital, all eyes are on the successful execution of the Bismayah New City project—a venture poised to redefine urban living standards and stimulate economic growth in the region.
