Israeli airstrikes claim dozens of lives in central, southern Gaza
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, the 98th day witnessed a devastating Israeli bombardment in central and southern Gaza.
An AFP journalist reported intense strikes and artillery shelling in the densely populated areas between Khan Yunis and Rafah, where many displaced individuals sought refuge. The health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza confirmed at least 59 fatalities and numerous injuries as a result of the bombardment.
The Israeli army claimed responsibility for the deaths of seven “terrorists” in Khan Yunis and an additional 20 in the Maghazi region to the north. Witnesses, including AFP photographers, observed black smoke rising over Rafah, where grieving Palestinians gathered beside white body bags containing the latest casualties. Amid the heart-wrenching scenes, mourners questioned the international community’s silence, asking, “Does anyone care about us?”
Residents in Rafah expressed anguish over civilian casualties, with one individual, Fayad Abu Rjeila, condemning an Israeli strike that claimed innocent lives. Israel’s relentless bombardment, aimed at eliminating Hamas, has resulted in a staggering death toll of at least 23,469, predominantly women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry. Since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, Israel has pursued its campaign, resulting in around 1,140 deaths in Israel, primarily among civilians.
Oxfam International, on Thursday, decried the daily death toll in Gaza as surpassing that of any major conflict this century. Sally Abi Khalil from Oxfam expressed disbelief at the international community’s inaction as the tragic events unfolded. Meanwhile, in northern Gaza, the World Health Organization delivered vital fuel and medical supplies to Al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, partially re-establishing services amid the dire humanitarian situation. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus conveyed this development on social media.
