Israeli military actions raise concerns of forced Palestinian exodus, UN, Jordan accuse
Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, voiced concerns that Israel’s military offensive and evacuation orders in Gaza suggest an attempt to clear the area of its Palestinian population. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi also accused Israel of a systematic effort to push Palestinians out of Gaza.
While Israel denies the allegations, it asserts its readiness for a prolonged conflict with Gaza’s Hamas rulers. The Israeli army reported 101 soldiers killed since the offensive began on October 27.
International mediation efforts led by Qatar continue, aiming to halt the conflict and secure the release of hostages. However, the willingness to discuss a ceasefire is diminishing. Israel faces global condemnation for the high Palestinian casualties, with over 17,700 reported deaths, mainly women and children.
Gaza’s dire humanitarian situation worsens, with 90% of its 2.3 million people displaced and facing severe shortages of food, water, and basic goods. The recent violence was triggered by Hamas’ October 7 raid in southern Israel, resulting in 1,200 deaths.
