Iraq ends 38-year wait, secures UNESCO Executive Board membership

After nearly four decades of anticipation, Iraq has successfully gained a coveted seat on the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as announced by the Iraqi Ministry of Education on Wednesday. The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported the long-awaited achievement, marking a significant milestone for the nation.

The decisive moment occurred during the International Conference of UNESCO’s 42nd session in Paris, where the election of Executive Board members transpired. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to the Iraqi people, with a special acknowledgment to academics and cultural elites who contributed to this success.

In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the historical significance of Iraq’s return to international prominence. He expressed pride in the nation’s rich legacy of providing the world with knowledge, science, and culture throughout ancient and modern times.

The Iraqi leader underscored that Iraq’s selection for UNESCO’s Executive Board aligns with the government’s overarching strategy to reinstate the country’s standing in global forums. Al-Sudani also commended the dedicated efforts of Iraq’s representatives in securing this esteemed position, emphasizing the collective achievement for the nation on the international stage.
