Iraqi President denounces Turkish violations in Kurdish regions
Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid voiced Iraq’s firm rejection of Turkish incursions into Kurdish territories within Iraq. Rashid expressed his concerns during a televised address, highlighting Ankara’s deployment of drones and establishment of military bases within Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
President Rashid emphasized that Iraq is resolute in opposing Turkish infringements on its sovereign territory. Baghdad is actively pursuing a security agreement with Ankara in an attempt to mitigate these violations, which have led to the unfortunate loss of civilian lives.
Over the weekend, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani convened a crucial meeting attended by President Rashid, Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Mohammed Al-Halbousi, and President of the Supreme Judicial Council Faiq Zaidan. The meeting, convened by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), addressed the latest developments and the prevailing political and security situation in Iraq.
The Iraqi leadership collectively condemned any aggression against their nation, especially in light of the recent airstrikes conducted by the Turkish Ministry of Defense on locations linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. It’s worth noting that the PKK claimed responsibility for a recent attack on the Security Directorate in the Turkish capital, Ankara, further escalating tensions in the region.
