WHO intervenes to assist northern Iraq wedding victims
In the aftermath of the devastating fire that engulfed a wedding hall in the city of Al-Hamdaniya, located in the northern Iraqi governorate of Nineveh, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stepped in to provide crucial assistance to the victims.
The tragic incident, which unfolded during a wedding celebration, resulted in a significant loss of life and numerous injuries, leaving the community reeling. Responding swiftly, the WHO issued a statement on Thursday outlining its immediate action to bolster Iraq’s Ministry of Health in delivering vital medical care to those affected.
According to the statement released by WHO officials, the organization swiftly allocated urgently needed medical supplies, including comprehensive hospital supply kits, to several medical facilities in the region. Al-Hamdaniya General Hospital, Al-Jamhoury Hospital, and the Mosul Specialized Center for Burns and Constructive Surgery were among the beneficiaries, ensuring an ample stock of essential resources for medical professionals on the front lines.
In addition to this support, the WHO disclosed its collaborative efforts with national initiatives to expedite the transportation and treatment of injured individuals in Mosul and Erbil hospitals, further enhancing the response to the tragedy.
The calamity struck when a massive fire ignited due to fireworks during a wedding event in Al-Hamdaniya on Tuesday evening. Official sources have reported a staggering toll, with approximately 100 lives lost and an additional 150 individuals sustaining injuries in the incident.
