Canada’s new Ambassador to Saudi Arabia presents credentials in Riyadh ceremony
Jean-Philippe Linteau, Canada’s newly appointed Ambassador-designate to Saudi Arabia, presented his credentials to an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event marked a significant step in the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Abdulmajeed Al-Smari, Deputy Minister for Protocol Affairs, graciously received a copy of Linteau’s credentials. The exchange symbolized the official recognition of Linteau as Canada’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
The Canadian government’s decision to appoint Linteau followed the momentous reconciliation between the two countries earlier this year. In May, diplomatic relations were restored, paving the way for this crucial appointment. The restoration came as a result of constructive discussions between Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The leaders engaged in talks during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Bangkok in November 2022.
The diplomatic rift between Saudi Arabia and Canada had its origins in a dispute that unfolded in 2018. However, with the recent restoration of ties and the appointment of Linteau, both nations are poised to strengthen their bilateral relationship and explore opportunities for collaboration across various sectors.
