AYAB condemns brutal attack on Yememi-American immigrant, Jamal Sawaid

Yememi-American immigrants have condemned the brutal attack on Jamal Sawaid.

According to a report, Sawaid was brutally attacked at his store by four men in New York City.

The attack was condemned in a statement by fellow Yememi-American immigrants under the umbrella of Alliances of Yememi-American Businesses (AYAB).

“Jamal Sawaid, a Yemeni immigrant and owner of a bodega in Coney Island, was brutally attacked by four men in his own store,” the statement reads.

It adds, “This reprehensible act of hate and violence against one of our own community members is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.”

AYAB stated further, “Jamal Sawaid is a hero in our community. Throughout the pandemic, he put himself at risk to provide essential goods and services to our neighborhood, feeding our families and supporting those in need.

“Last year, Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus recognized his outstanding contributions with an honorary certificate. He deserved recognition for his invaluable service, not the violent attack he endured.”

AYAB maintained that the attack is a reminder that hate crimes continue to threaten the safety and well-being of Yememi-American
community.

It, therefore, called on New York leaders and representatives, including Mayor Eric Adams, Justin
Brannan, and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, to take swift action to stop hate crimes and protect our immigrant brothers and sisters.

“We urge community leaders and elected officials to come out on April 17th, at 5 PM to Jamal’s store, at 1716 mermaid Avenue Brooklyn New York 11224 to stand in solidarity with Jamal and all those who have been affected by hate crimes.

“Let us show the world that we will not rest until justice is served and our city is a safe haven for all.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jamal and his family, and we will continue to support him in any way we can. Together, we can make a difference and build a stronger, more inclusive
community.”
