Deen Digest | What It Means to Be A True Muslim
Islam is not only a religion but also a complete way of life. It teaches us how to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to Allah (SWT) and beneficial to us and society. Being a true Muslim requires adhering to the principles of Islam and living by them in every aspect of our lives.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated, “The best of you are those who have the best character” (Sahih Al-Bukhari). This hadith highlights the importance of having good manners and character as an essential component of being a true Muslim. Islam teaches us to be kind, compassionate, and respectful towards all individuals regardless of their faith, gender, or background.
Another crucial aspect of being a true Muslim is fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (SWT), which includes the five pillars of Islam. The first pillar is the declaration of faith, known as the shahada, which states that there is no god but Allah (SWT), and Muhammad (PBUH) is His messenger. The second pillar is prayer, which is mandatory five times a day. The third pillar is giving charity, which encourages Muslims to help those in need. The fourth pillar is fasting during the month of Ramadan, which strengthens one’s faith and self-discipline. The fifth pillar is the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj, which is mandatory for those who are financially and physically capable.
In addition to the five pillars, Muslims are also encouraged to follow the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam and is considered the ultimate guide for Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the perfect example of a true Muslim, and Muslims should strive to follow his teachings and actions in their daily lives.
More so, being a true Muslim also involves respecting and upholding the rights of others, including one’s parents, spouse, children, and neighbors. Islam encourages us to be just, fair, and compassionate towards others, and to avoid any form of oppression or injustice.
More essentially, being a true Muslim requires continuous self-reflection and self-improvement. Muslims should strive to better themselves, their communities, and the world around them. As the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small” (Sahih Al-Bukhari). Consistency in good deeds is essential in Islam, and every small act of kindness and righteousness counts towards attaining Allah’s pleasure.
To be true Muslim involves adhering to the principles of Islam, fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (SWT) and others, and striving for continuous self-improvement. By following the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Muslims can live a life that is pleasing to Allah (SWT) and beneficial to themselves and society. As stated in the Qur’an, “You are the best community ever raised for mankind, you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and you believe in Allah” (Surah Al Imran, 3:110). This verse highlights the responsibility of Muslims to be a role model for others and to strive towards excellence in every aspect of their lives.
