Veteran footballer Jack Charlton dies at 85
A veteran footballer, Jack Charlton, has died at 85.
Charlton’s death was announced in a statement released by his family on Friday July 10, 2020.
According to the statement, the former Leeds United defender died peacefully late on Friday at his home in Northumberland, northern England.
“We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life,” the statement reads.
“He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people.
“His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories,” it adds.
Charlton was a greater footballer who helped England beat West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley.
While issuing his condolences on his Twitter handle, Irish Prime Minister, Micheal Martin, said he was so sad to hear of the passing of Jack Charlton.
He noted that the late footballer brought honesty and joy to the football world. He added Charlton personified a golden era in Irish football.
“He gave us magical memories. Thank you Jack,” he said.
