The United States government has commended the diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Somaliland.

While disclosing this on its Twitter handle on Thursday July 9 , 2020, the US National Security Council wrote that it was great to see Taiwan improving on its relationship with the East Africa at this critical period.

“Taiwan is a great partner in health, education, technical assistance, and more,” NSC posted on Twitter.

The diplomatic relationship existing between Hargeisa and Taipei has, however, been rejected by China.

China condemned the diplomatic relations. Its emissaries are meeting with Somali President, Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo, in the wake of Taiwan-Somaliland relations.

Commenting on the US position, Rashid Abdi, a Horn of Africa researcher and analyst, noted that the move was unprecedented.

He added that people pushing for Somaliland independence have expressed their gratitude to the US government for the recognition.

Taiwan on July 3, appointed Ambassador Lou Chen-Hwa, as the head of Taiwan Representative Office in Somaliland. On the other hand, Ambassador Hagi Mohamed is set to head the reverse office in Taipei.
