Mexican police arrest 3 in connection with rehab center attack
Three men, who allegedly involved in a Wednesday bloody gun attack on a drug rehabilitation center, have been arrested by Mexican police special forces.
According the police, 27 people were killed in the attack that occurred in the central Guanajuato in the city of Irapuato on Wednesday 1st July 2020.
The authority said the gunmen burst into the center, forced people unto the ground and shot them.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador condemned the attack, the deadliest in the country.
The president said the attack could be possibly due in part to conspiracy between local authority and the criminal gangs. He therefore urged the Guanajuato government to thoroughly investigate the incident.
Guanajuato’s large-scale energy infrastructure has attracted rival cartels like Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco and New Generation who battle each other over control of lucrative trade in the city.
The authorities reported on 21 June that about 26 members of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel were captured.
Reacting to the arrest, the cartel set up blockades of burning vehicles in three cities including Celeya where the gang earlier murdered six members of a family and one minor.
According to the authorities, since 2018 when Lopez Obrador came to power, the Wednesday’s attack was the second deadliest after Veracruz’s attack in August last year in which 28 people were killed.
Official figures shows that more than 290,000 lives have been lost since 2006 when a military operation was launched against drug trafficking gangs by the government then.
