Kenyan detectives arrest three policemen for dragging woman behind motorbike
Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations said, on Thursday 11 June 2020, that Kenyan detectives have arrested three police officers for allegedly whipping a woman and dragging her along behind a motorbike.
The report from the police directorate stated that three police officers were on Wednesday 10 June 2020 arrested by Kenyan detectives following circulation of a video showing a woman being wiped and dragged on a motorbike in Kuresoi South Sub-Country.
The video revealed how police beat 21-year-old Mercy Cherono, emerging days after pockets of protests were staged in Nairobi over extrajudicial police killing in Kenya and against the death of George Floyd in the custody of police in the United Stat
Kenyan police are commonly accused of brutality, as the Independent Oversight Authority, saddled with watching over government activities, has received thousands of complaints from Kenyan residents since it was set up in 2011.
According to the recent report of the watchdog, an example of the police brutality allegations was in the preliminary investigations showing police to be responsible for 15 deaths and 31 cases of injury since the beginning of an imposed overnight curfew across Kenya to curb COVID-19 from 27 March, 2020.
The police in Kenya have a historically antagonistic relationship with civilians. Before coronavirus pandemic, Human Rights Watch documented 8 cases of police killings in less than two months.
Among the recent questionable concern was the death of a teenage boy Yasin Hussein Moyo who was killed by a stray bullet while standing on his balcony.
Further investigations into Moyo’s death saw Director of Public Prosecutions Noirdin Haji approve the arrest and prosecution of a police officer.
