Mayweather to cover George Floyd’s funeral expenses
Former boxing Champion, Mayweather, has offered to cover George Floyd’s Funeral and memorial services in Houston, Floyd’s home town, and also in Minnesota and North Carolina.
This was confirmed by Mayweather Promotion in a tweet on June 1.
The tweet reads, “Undisputed champion @floydmayweather told @HollywoodUL in an exclusive interview, that he will commit to paying for the funeral costs of George Floyd.”
According to the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather has been in touch with the family and familyhave accepted the offer.
“He will handle costs for the funeral on June 9 in Floyd’s hometown of Houston, as well as other expenses,” he said.
Floyd, 46, died on Monday 25 May while he was handcuffed and a Minneapolis official kneeled on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Floyd could be heard saying “I can’t breathe.”
He died shortly after he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
Floyd’s death has sparked protests and unrest in Minneapolis and across the United States as people continue to demand for justice and equality of African Americans in the United States.
The protest which began in Minneapolis has spread across the world as people in different part of the world join the fight for Justice and equality in America and around the world.
Mayweather who lived in Las Vegas retired in 2017 undefeated after 50 fights, winning five division titles. In 1998, he defeated Genaro Hernandez to win his first world championship for the WBC super featherweight title.
He was said to have covered the funeral expenses for his opponent, Hernandez who died of cancer 13 years after the fight.
As one of the best boxers of his generation, Mayweather defeated boxers such as Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, and Manny Pacquiao.
