Nigerian women trapped in human trafficking rescued from Lebanon
Not less than fifty trafficked Nigerian women have been rescued from Lebanon
This was disclosed on Tuesday May 26, 2020, by the Nigerian foreign minister, Geoffrey Onyeama.
On arrival, the trafficked women were taken to the quarantine facility as a measure against coronavirus infection.
Upon completion of their stay in quarantine, they will be granted interview by the anti-trafficking agency.
This trafficking report is coming barely a couple of months after a Nigerian woman working as a domestic maid in Lebanon was advertised on a Facebook post for sale at $1,000.
Every year, thousands of women are trafficked from African countries under the guise of getting them jobs in Europe or Asia. But the story is different when they get there as some of them are either offered to work as domestic maids or forced into prostitution.
Onyeama wrote on his Twitter handle, “We thank the Lebanese authorities for financing and supporting the successful evacuation on Sunday.”
According to Nigeria’s National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, the women would get the right rehabilitation and counseling on how to rebuild their lives after getting their detailing.
“Efforts are being put into gear with the foreign minister to repatriate other citizens who are victims of human trafficking,” the agency said.
