New York Muslim leaders defy Trump’s rule, ask Muslims to follow medical experts
The Islamic Leadership Council of New York, popularly known as Majlis Ash-Shura, has enjoined Muslims in the city to adhere strictly to the preventive measures stipulated by the medical experts.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Council on Friday May 22, 2020.
The proactive reaction of the Council followed the directive of the United States President, Donald Trump, on the reopening of all houses of worship, including mosques.
In a bid to ensure the safety of Muslims across the country, the Council therefore called on all Muslims, especially those within the New York city, to ignore Trump’s directive.
“Notwithstanding new rules about small religious gatherings in NYS, and after further discussions with Imams, medical experts, and city officials, mosques should remain closed, including for Eid, for everyone’s safety,” the statement reads.
