England defender, Kieran Trippier charged with breaching FA’s betting rules
England star Kieran Trippier has been charged by the England International for allegedly breaching the Football Association’s betting rules.
Trippier was said to have allegedly involved in several breaches in July 2019, and he has until May 18 this year to appeal.
While confirming Trippier’s charge in a statement on Friday May 1, FA stated that “Trippier has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA’s betting rules, specifically in relation to Rule E8(1)(a)(ii) and Rule E8(1)(b), during the period of July 2019.”
The FA governing body went ahead to clarify the rule stating, “A participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition; or (ii) any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters.”
Rule E8(1)(b) in the FA’s betting rules pertains to “Where a participant provides to any other person any information relating to football which the participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time, the participant shall be in breach of this rule where any of that information is used by that other person for, or in relation to, betting.”
The England defender has given a response contrary to the charge saying that he has never violated any of the FA’s betting rules.
“I have fully complied with the FA’s investigation over the past several months on a voluntary basis and will continue to do so,” said Trippier.
“I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed any football related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting,” he added.
Trippier’s charge came after Daniel Sturridge, former England striker was banned from football related activities for four months after he was charged with 11 betting breaches which eventually led to termination of his three-year contract with Trabzonspor in March. Sturridge was also fined £150,000 by the FA.
Trippier football professional career started in 2009 at Manchester City before moving to Burnley in 2012. In 2015 he struck a deal with Spurs where he made 114 appearances before leaving for Spain.
Trippier has 19 England caps to his credit and scored in 2018 World Cup Semi final against Russia. His last international appearance was in October at European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria.
