Covid-19: UN warns of extreme hunger, calls for actions
As the world battles life-threatening pandemic, the United Nations has warned of extreme hunger, stressing that about 265 million people will be affected worldwide.
Disclosing this on Tuesday April 21 via Zoom, Chief Economist and Director of Research, Assessment and Monitoring at WFP, Arif Husain stated that, “Around 265 million people to suffer from acute hunger round the world.”
According WFP, the lockdown occasioned by COVID-19 and its economic impacts would cause 130 million people to join 135 million persons already struck by a shortage of food across the globe.
“COVID-19 is potentially catastrophic for millions who are hanging by a thread.
“We all need to come together to deal with this because if we don’t, the cost will be too high,” Hussein added.
He further stated that many lives will be lost and many livelihoods will be shattered.
However, farmers across Nigeria have warned that the predictions made by bodies like the WFP will become a reality soon if they are not allowed to take advantage of the rainy season which begins in May.
