Ghana battles economic distress, suspends lockdown

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has suspended a three-week lockdown in two cities.

While disclosing his on Monday April 20, 2020, the president cited improved coronavirus testing and the severe impact of the restrictions on the poor and vulnerable in the country.

“Nonessential businesses in Accra and Kumasi, the country’s two largest cities, can re-open and residents can return to work but must continue to practice social distancing,” Akufo-Addo announced.

He added that existing bans on public gatherings and school closure were still in place.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to ensure that they wear masks when going outside and to comply with measures placed social gathering.

According to Ghana’s Disease Surveillance Department, as of Monday April 2020, the country had confirmed 1,042 cases, and nine deaths.
