Nigerian high court orders release of detained activist
At the Federal High Court sitting in the country’s federal territory, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu has ruled that the convener of the RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, the detained human rights activist be released by the Department of State Services (DSS).
While giving the order today in Abuja, he said, “The DSS is hereby given 24-hour ultimatum to release the Omoyele Sowore.”
He also awarded a N100, 000 fine against the DSS over its delay to serve the defence counsel with additional proof of evidence in the ongoing trial of Sowore and Olawale Bakare.
The DSS has on a couple of occasions acknowledged that it had received an earlier court order to release Sowore but could not just let him go without proper documentation to the appropriate sureties.
The judge ordered that the fine be paid to the defendants before the next adjourned date of December 6, 2019.
