Jackson Heights, NY – NYC Council Member Daniel Dromm (D-Elmhurst, Jackson Heights) was joined by Queens Library President & CEO Dennis Walcott and dozens of local children and parents at the first Drag Queen Story Hour at the Jackson Heights Library.

Drag Queens Story Hour first launched in San Francisco in 2015 and has since expanded to libraries, schools and other community centers in New York City and Los Angeles. These events are for ages 3-8 and are led by drag queens like Angel Elektra, who read stories, sing songs and lead arts and crafts activities.  Dromm allocated the funding necessary to make the event possible.

“I am thrilled to bring Drag Queen Story Hour to Jackson Heights,” said Council Member Dromm.  “Drag Queen Story Hour is a fun and fabulous way of encouraging children to read.  It is also a great way to teach them to embrace our society’s differences and diversity.  The expressions of joy on their faces when they saw and interacted with Angel Elektra were priceless.  The flamboyancy and theatrics of Drag Queen Story Hour truly captured the children’s attention and helped facilitate learning.  I thank Queens Library President and CEO Dennis Walcott and his staff for working with me to make this event a success.”

Dromm and the Queens Library will host another Drag Queen Story Hour at Elmhurst Library, 86-07 Broadway on Tuesday, March 13th from 4pm to 5pm.  Drag Queen Story Hour is free and open to the public.
